News from Shanghai juvenile detention centre

The Xinwen Wanbao reported that the nine-years compulsory education plan was implemented by Shanghai juvenile detention centre (shaonian guanjiaosuo) last year.

Education to juvenile detainees is provided by nearby schools, who send their teachers to the guanjiaosuo. Juvenile detainees are required to attend classes four hours per day. Quite a bit of propaganda and some heart-shattering stories mixed with interesting information can be found here (in Chinese).

The Shanghai Juvenile Detention Centre was established in 1953. It is currently situated in Songjiang District, where it occupies a surface of 21.000 square meters. It is one of those units in the correctional system that are open to the public, in case you want to have a look at it during your next trip to Shanghai.
